There are plenty of reasons to fear the Paterson Police department. The PPD is notorious for its blatant corruption, cover up and outright harassment of lower-income residents of Paterson. Following years of this, the state took over the department in 2024. While its numerous federal indictments are well-known, few outside of the city know that the Patersion police department kills more of its city residents than any other department in the state. This is true in both relative and absolute terms. Violence, particularly anti-black and anti-poor violence, is embedded within the institution of police. Thus, no amount of "bias trainings" or other similar programs make much of a difference.
